The City Council of San Lorenzo de El Escorial has unveiled a plaque honoring Miguel Espelleta Suárez, recognizing his fundamental role in the creation of the Housing Cooperative and the subsequent Colonia de San Lorenzo.

The ceremony was attended by the mayor, Carlota López Esteban, Espelleta's family members, representatives of the Housing Cooperative, residents, friends, and acquaintances.
The mayor emphasized that the tribute settles a "debt of gratitude" the municipality owed to Espelleta, a figure deeply involved in the local community. Born in 1934, Espelleta collaborated with the Red Cross, participated in traditional festivities, and wrote for the emblematic Semanario Escurialense under the pseudonym "el duende de las Casillas," in addition to promoting charitable initiatives.
Espelleta's most significant social achievement was founding the San Lorenzo Housing Cooperative in November 1966, serving as its initial president. This initiative transformed rocky terrain into a new neighborhood, facilitating access to decent housing for hundreds of working families. Notably, despite his tireless altruistic efforts, Espelleta never personally benefited from one of these homes.
The Municipal Corporation, following the process managed by the Council's Honors and Distinctions Commission, thus fulfills a pending public recognition. The plaque will serve to remind future generations of the value of generosity and community work, according to the mayor.
