This project has been incorporated into Europan 19, a European competition for architecture, urbanism, and landscape focused on young talent, sustainability, biodiversity, and promoting new ways of relating to the territory.
The Councilor for Action in Neighborhoods, Ana González, highlighted that the initiative responds to a historic demand from the neighborhood movement to recover, care for, and protect the territory and its environmental and archaeological wealth, considering it a priority for the Municipal Government.
The old church will become the future Interpretation Center, recognizing the value of this area which holds significant natural wealth. It will serve as the main entrance to the Getafe Río renaturalization project and complements the recently awarded Lagunas de Horna and the Canal del Manzanares.
The environment is a privileged location for bird watching and features archaeological sites spanning from the Paleolithic and Bronze Age to Roman and Visigothic periods, including the Roman villa of La Torrecilla (Asset of Cultural Interest) and the Visigothic necropolis of El Jardinillo.
Currently, the project summary sheet has been presented, which includes the results of the participatory process ‘Diseñatón’. The official proposal will be presented at the Foro Entresesiones in Barcelona on November 5, 6, and 7, with the final submission scheduled for December 2026.
