The underground works for the A-5 along the Paseo de Extremadura continue to progress according to schedule. The Madrid City Council has confirmed that the two projected tunnels, for both entry and exit into the capital, are now fully excavated. The project is now entering a new phase focused on preparing them for traffic opening, scheduled for December 2026, a development that will finally benefit the residents of Alcorcón.
The delegate for Urbanism, Environment, and Mobility, Borja Carabante, announced this Monday that in the coming months, work will include asphalting, lighting installation, variable message sign panel setup, and the establishment of technical rooms necessary for the infrastructure's operation. These statements were made during a visit to the ongoing work near the Alto de Extremadura Metro station.
Starting in August, work will commence to connect both tunnels with the M-30, integrating ventilation systems, security cameras, and emergency exits, managed by Calle 30. Carabante highlighted the strategic importance of this project for mobility and urban development in the western part of the capital, stating it will transform the Latina district.
The City Council also plans to begin placing beams at the tunnel ends by the end of June, near the Carretera de Boadilla del Monte and in the Batán area. These structures will allow for temporary crossings and improved circulation, as well as reducing the noise impact of the works on local residents.
In parallel, the urbanization of the future Paseo Verde del Suroeste will begin in September, situated above the underground route. This 80,000 square meter space will feature green areas and parks, utilizing some of the earth excavated from the tunnels for planting trees.
