The Ostomy Nursing Consultation at the Hospital Universitario de Móstoles reminds that having an ostomy should not prevent individuals from traveling, engaging in physical activity, or enjoying the beach and pool during the summer months. With the holiday season approaching, a series of recommendations have been disseminated to help ostomy carriers organize their trips and face the summer with security, confidence, and autonomy.
Stoma therapist nurse, Antonia Gil Molano, emphasizes the importance of adequate planning to prevent incidents. Key recommendations include preparing sanitary supplies before any travel. Professionals advise carrying more devices than initially thought necessary, distributing spares in different bags, and protecting them from high temperatures. For air travel, it is recommended to carry supplies in hand luggage.
As additional support, the nursing consultation offers patients the option to send a photograph of their prepared vacation supplies beforehand. This allows the specialist nurse to review that they have all necessary items for the trip and address any doubts before departure.
Hydration is a crucial aspect. People with ostomies, especially those with ileostomies, are at a higher risk of dehydration. It is recommended to increase water intake, drink frequently without waiting for thirst, and use electrolyte drinks if necessary. Recognizing early signs of dehydration, such as intense thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, or weakness, is important.
Care for the skin around the stoma is essential in summer. High temperatures and sweat can cause irritation or affect device adherence. Therefore, it is advised to keep the skin clean and dry, check the collection system more frequently, and use protective products recommended by the specialist nurse.
Swimming in pools or the sea is compatible with an ostomy. It is recommended to check that the device is properly adhered before entering the water, empty the bag if necessary, and always carry spare supplies when leaving home.
Regarding clothing, comfortable, light, and breathable fabrics are advised. The diet should be balanced and rich in water, including fruits and vegetables well-tolerated by each patient. It is also encouraged to continue with physical activity, avoiding peak heat hours and resting in the shade.
Professionals at the Hospital Universitario de Móstoles emphasize that ostomy care involves not only physical aspects but also emotional and social adaptation requiring specialized support. Open communication with the healthcare team about concerns regarding daily life, diet, physical activity, sexuality, or device management improves quality of life and care safety.
“"Open and close communication between patients and healthcare professionals favors a better quality of life, improves care safety, and helps resolve situations that can sometimes cause uncertainty or concern."
The collaborative work of the proctology surgery team and the Ostomy Nursing Consultation provides comprehensive care focused on each person's needs.
