The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has formalized the contract to develop a feasibility study for the functional optimization and capacity increase of the C-3 Commuter Line in Madrid. The specific section to be analyzed runs between San Cristóbal Industrial and Aranjuez.
This study, with a budget of 363,000 euros (VAT included) and an initial execution period of 24 months, will address the coexistence of commuter, medium-distance, and freight traffic on the line. This mix leads to high saturation levels during certain hours and varying speeds, impacting service reliability.
The section in question includes nine stations or stops: San Cristóbal Industrial, El Casar, Getafe Industrial, La Tenería (currently under construction), Pinto, Valdemoro, Ciempozuelos, Seseña (out of service), and Aranjuez. The analysis will evaluate potential actions to enhance the capacity and reliability of the railway operation.
Measures to be considered include improvements to signaling and safety systems, such as re-signaling and signal optimization, as well as the potential implementation of a third and fourth track along all or part of the section. The ultimate goal is to select the most suitable interventions to improve the overall functionality of the Madrid-Aranjuez corridor, which will also contribute to reducing travel times for other regional services.
According to the Ministry, these works align with the objectives of the 2030 Strategy, promoting sustainable metropolitan mobility through the commuter service and enhancing accessibility with a quality railway system. Furthermore, operational safety in rail transport will be strengthened.
