The Spanish capital is bracing for a Sunday of restricted mobility due to the confluence of two major demonstrations in the city center and various incidents on the Cercanías Madrid network. These protests will lead to traffic closures in key areas such as the Prado-Recoletos axis, Atocha, Alcalá, and Sol, in addition to modifying the routes of up to 33 bus lines operated by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT).
The main surface mobilization will be a demonstration called by educational unions in defense of public education. The march, promoted by CC.OO., UGT, and CONFAPA, will start at 12:00 PM from Neptuno Square and conclude at Puerta del Sol, passing through Cibeles Square. Traffic closures associated with this protest are expected between 11:30 AM and 3:00 PM, affecting Cánovas del Castillo Square, Prado Promenade, Cibeles Square, Alcalá Street, and Puerta del Sol. Consequently, 26 EMT lines will alter their usual routes.
Concurrently, another protest organized by the Internationalist Assembly of Madrid and the Assembly of Madrid against Rearmament and Militarization will take place. This demonstration will depart at 12:00 PM from Atocha towards the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the slogan “Against rearmament and imperialist war.” This call is part of an international day of action promoted by Stop ReArm Europe. Traffic closures expected for this march, also between 11:30 AM and 3:00 PM, will impact Atocha Street, Prado Promenade, Jacinto Benavente Square, and Plaza de la Provincia. Seven EMT lines will have their routes modified.
These surface restrictions coincide with new incidents on Cercanías Madrid. The Sol station, served by lines C-3, C-4a, and C-4b, will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday due to tunnel improvement works. Trains on the C-3 line will terminate at Atocha, and those on the C-4 line at Nuevos Ministerios or Atocha, depending on their origin. Passengers can use lines C-2, C-7, C-8, and C-10 for the journey between Nuevos Ministerios and Atocha. The closure of Sol will be repeated on the weekend of June 20th and 21st.
Line C-5 will also experience modifications due to works by Adif to increase capacity at Atocha station. Trains on the Móstoles-El Soto-Humanes route will start and end their journey at Atocha, requiring passengers to transfer for further travel. This disruption will also occur on June 20th and 21st. Additionally, line C-3 will face nighttime closures on several June weekends between Getafe Industrial, Pinto, and Valdemoro, with an alternative bus service provided by Renfe.
