The Dimas Project, promoted by the Juan Pablo II Music Studies Center, has the main objective of performing acts of mercy through music. The orchestra is composed of students from the Juan Pablo II schools in Parla, Alcorcón, and Guadarrama, who combine their academic education with rigorous musical development.
The first performance of this initiative took place at the Juan Pablo II School in Parla, which acted as host. The event brought together more than 70 inmates from penitentiary centers of the Diocese of Getafe, along with their families, students, teachers, and volunteers. The gathering was also attended by the Bishop of the Diocese of Getafe, who addressed words of encouragement to those present.
“"When I heard certain pieces, it was like going back to my childhood."
The uniqueness of this orchestra lies in its purpose not to play for conventional audiences, but for those who rarely have access to music. Hospitals, residences, penitentiary centers, and palliative care units thus become their usual stages, offering free concerts as a form of comfort and companionship.
When it is not possible to move the entire orchestra, small chamber groups bring this experience to particularly delicate spaces, such as ICUs or pediatric oncology units, providing support to those going through difficult situations. The Dimas Project, inspired by the figure of the good thief, focuses on the penitentiary field, promoting reintegration through musical and personal interaction.
This initiative is based on a solid educational model. The Juan Pablo II schools implement a music training program with international ABRSM certification. Each center has its own orchestra, and the Juan Pablo II Youth Symphony Orchestra brings together the most advanced students, serving as a platform for artistic excellence and social impact.
