The actions have focused on the installation of awnings, porches, and shade sails in courtyards to mitigate the heat. Additionally, the replacement of windows with more efficient models that lower indoor temperatures by several degrees, the installation of drinking water fountains, and increased tree planting as part of the Sustainable Schools Plan have continued.
The Councilor for Maintenance, Roberto Fernández, highlighted that during the current term, more than 8,000,000 euros have been invested and over 200 trees planted in the centers, always in collaboration with management teams to address their needs.
Improvements have been made in all 37 municipal centers, including the Santiago Ramón y Cajal Special Education College, where shaded areas were created in the sandpit and courtyards. Summer works also included the renovation of gymnasiums, painting of classrooms and common areas, refurbishment of bathrooms, conditioning of spaces for urban gardens, and the installation of more benches.
These investments come after the Community of Madrid Government transferred the responsibility for air conditioning schools and institutes to the centers themselves, a situation the local executive criticizes. They are demanding that the Community transfer the necessary budget and are asking if it will supplement the 400 million euros mobilized by the Spanish Government for this purpose.
