During a meeting with the Minister of Education, Mercedes Zarzalejo, Hernández called for immediate responses. She recalled that the City Council made two municipal plots available to the regional administration in the Plenary session of December 2025, but more than six months later, the regional government has not even selected one to start the project.
Hernández stated that this situation represents a "blockade by the Community of Madrid, which punishes public education." She added, "We have put the land on a platter for them, and they haven't even completed the process of receiving it." She emphasized the importance of preventing Buenavista from suffering similar severe school enrollment problems as those in the Los Molinos neighborhood, where the new institute has accumulated six years of delays and forced students to study in temporary structures.
The Buenavista neighborhood has experienced significant demographic growth with a young and constantly increasing population, leading to the opening of early education centers such as the CEIP María Blanchard and the Municipal Early Childhood Center Arcoíris. However, secondary education planning has not kept pace, and the neighborhood currently lacks its own institute.
This deficiency forces families to rely on the José Hierro and La Senda institutes, located in Sector III, or they fear their children will be displaced to El Bercial. The situation is expected to become critical in the very short term, as these two institutes will soon have to accommodate the first cohort from CEIP María Blanchard and future students from the neighborhood, potentially overwhelming current resources.
In addition to the scarcity of places, there are concerns from families demanding education entirely in Spanish. The City Council has also conveyed to the Ministry the demands of these families, who seek enrollment in the IES José Hierro, the only non-bilingual center in the area, which is already at full capacity. The Getafe council has reiterated that the freedom of educational center choice must also uphold and guarantee families' right to choose Spanish as a formative option.
