Getafe has been identified as a model municipality in Spain for its paper and cardboard recycling practices, according to the latest bulletin from the Pajaritas Azules program.

The Pajaritas Azules program, celebrating its tenth anniversary, has published a bulletin recognizing Getafe and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as national examples in selective paper and cardboard collection. The publication highlights the model implemented in Getafe to improve recycling quality, allowing for precise identification of areas with the best results and those requiring specific measures.
The waste characterization system implemented by LYMA, the municipal company, is a key element. This analysis, conducted container by container and by neighborhood, offers more precise detection of problems in waste separation compared to traditional controls. This information enables the City Council to adapt awareness campaigns and optimize collection routes.
The bulletin also notes that access control systems for specific containers have proven to significantly reduce the presence of improper waste, thereby improving the quality of recovered paper and cardboard. Getafe has held the program's highest distinction, three Blue Pajaritas, consecutively for over five years, earning it the title of Illustrious Pajarita.
Getafe's experience is presented as a success story for other Spanish municipalities seeking to improve their recycling rates and move towards more efficient waste management. Issue 47 of the ‘Reciclaje al Día’ bulletin reviews the trajectory of Pajaritas Azules, an initiative that fosters the exchange of experiences and recognizes the efforts of local administrations in selective collection.
