The Aranjuez City Council has named the Reina Sofía Foundation as Amotinada Mayor 2026, recognizing its trajectory in solidarity, research, and support for vulnerable groups.

The Plenary of the Municipal Corporation of the Aranjuez City Council approved last Wednesday, July 15, the appointment of the Reina Sofía Foundation as Amotinada Mayor 2026 for the Fiestas del Motín de Aranjuez. This distinction, declared of International Tourist Interest, acknowledges the institution's work serving society.
The proposal, promoted by the Mayor of Aranjuez, Miguel Gómez Herrero, is based on the City Council's Regulations on Honors and Distinctions, which allows the title to be awarded to individuals or entities distinguished for defending democratic liberties or for their support of the less fortunate.
The Reina Sofía Foundation, established on May 17, 1977, embodies these values with nearly five decades of social, health, educational, and environmental projects. Its work aims to improve the quality of life for those in need and strengthen the social fabric through collaboration with administrations and organizations.
Its commitment to research and care for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, since 2002, is particularly noteworthy. The Foundation has allocated millions of euros to scientific projects for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, as well as supporting affected individuals and their families.
Furthermore, the Foundation supports the elderly, people with disabilities, families at risk of exclusion, and particularly vulnerable groups. It collaborates with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks, humanitarian organizations, and international cooperation projects, in addition to responding to emergencies and natural disasters.
The presentation of the accreditation scroll will take place next Saturday, September 5, during the institutional ceremony preceding the traditional scenic representation of the Motín de Aranjuez in the Plaza de Parejas of the Royal Palace. This event commemorates the historical events that occurred in the Royal Site between March 17 and 19, 1808.
