A study by Rey Juan Carlos University and the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain reveals that high temperatures increase the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures in children.

Dravet syndrome is a rare genetic condition that begins during the first year of life. It is characterized by prolonged epileptic seizures, as well as motor difficulties, behavioral problems, and cognitive impairment in patients.
The research, led by the Hum&QRinHS group, examined the experiences of families during heatwaves. Findings indicate that rising ambient temperatures act as a triggering factor, increasing both the duration and severity of convulsive episodes.
To manage these risks, parents employ various thermoregulation measures. Common strategies include wearing light clothing, staying in air-conditioned indoor spaces, restricting outdoor activities, and the use of antipyretics.
The work highlights the importance of integrating these daily practices into clinical recommendations. The authors note that further research into preventing heat-related seizures is essential to improve the quality of life for those affected.
