The environmental organization Ecologistas en Acción del Suroeste has filed a formal complaint with the Community of Madrid, describing the situation in an extensive area north of Alcorcón as a "serious environmental crisis." According to their reports, debris and other types of waste are allegedly being buried in this area, with suspicions of materials containing asbestos.
The complaint, submitted to the General Sub-directorate of Environmental Inspection and Discipline of the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Interior, requests the urgent provisional suspension of activities pending a thorough investigation. The group details that heavy machinery is being used to cover large quantities of waste with soil, which has reportedly led to the removal of some vegetation and the disruption of habitats for various animal species in the area.
The affected area, spanning approximately 985,000 square meters, is located south of the Ventorro del Cano industrial estate, adjacent to the Vereda de Castilla, and close to the municipal border with Boadilla del Monte. Classified as non-developable protected land, these grounds belonged to the Ministry of Defense until March 2023, when they were auctioned under the designation of Artillery Firing Line. The space, frequented by hikers and cyclists, already contained old debris dumps integrated into the landscape, as well as more recent illegal dumping.
Ecologistas en Acción particularly highlights the severe impact on the western part of the plot, which previously supported a significant mass of Mediterranean vegetation, primarily broom and holm oaks. The organization claims this ecosystem hosted associated fauna, and the earthmoving activities have affected both the flora and the habitats.
As of now, neither the Community of Madrid nor the landowners have issued public statements regarding the complaints. The environmental group now awaits an inspection by environmental authorities to determine if any violations of waste management or environmental protection regulations have occurred.
