The Community of Madrid has announced the creation of a new industrial district in the northern area, encompassing Alcobendas, San Sebastián de los Reyes, and Tres Cantos, with a focus on the biopharmaceutical and aerospace sectors. This decision has drawn criticism due to the exclusion of Getafe, a key player in the regional aeronautical industry.
This new district, expected to launch this year, will offer a single point of contact, specialized training programs, and foster collaboration among companies, universities, and research centers. This was detailed by Rocío Albert, Minister of Economy, Finance and Employment, during the closing of the Horizonte Madrid Norte conference.
Minister Albert also highlighted the significant economic dynamism of Madrid's northern municipalities, which concentrate leading industries, business centers, and technology parks along the A-1 corridor. Strategic sectors mentioned include audiovisual, with over 3,500 companies in Madrid; data centers, with 35 in service and 14 under construction; and the aerospace industry, where the region accounts for 90% of national activity, with 70% of this located in Tres Cantos.
However, the omission of Getafe from this new district has been a point of contention. This southern municipality hosts Airbus, a highly relevant company in the aeronautical sector, along with an extensive network of auxiliary companies. Getafe's importance is further underscored by the announcement from Francisco Javier Sánchez Segura, president of Airbus Spain, regarding anticipated growth in the coming years, with a significant impact on the Getafe factory.
Getafe's exclusion was perceived last year as a disregard for the municipality's industrial potential and history. Mayor Sara Hernández described the Community's proposal as a «new whim», arguing that the distribution of sectors was carried out «without any rigor or knowledge of Madrid's reality». Sources close to the mayor have reaffirmed this stance, emphasizing that Getafe is the third aerospace hub in Europe and the first in Spain, despite the new district being located in the northern region.
