The mayor of Alcorcón, Candelaria Testa, has confirmed the suspension of the waste tax planned for 2026. This measure is being taken while awaiting the decision of the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid regarding the appeal filed against the fiscal ordinance that regulates this tax.
The mayoress explained that the City Council has already halted the collection schedule for next year, given the possibility that the judiciary may annul the regulation. In such a scenario, the City Council would have to refund amounts collected in both 2025 and 2026. "We are awaiting all the pending judicial resolutions, because I insist, it is a measure of financial prudence," stated Testa.
The suspension of the tax is part of the so-called "social shield" promoted by the municipal government to cushion the economic impact of the current international situation. The mayor had previously indicated this option, conditioned by technical, legal, and economic reports, as well as the approval of municipal auditing.
Within this package of measures, an increase in social aid is included, raising the amount of the Home Check (Cheque Hogar) from 750 to 800 euros and strengthening Social Emergency benefits. Furthermore, changes are planned to facilitate the payment of municipal taxes, such as extending IBI payment deadlines and offering more installment options.
For its part, the Popular Party had recently called for the immediate withdrawal of the tax and the refund of amounts already paid, citing "serious technical and legal deficiencies" in the ordinance, and asserting that over 9,000 residents have requested reimbursement for this year's bill.
