The Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón, a public center in the Community of Madrid, has incorporated an innovative minimally invasive gynecological technique for the surgical treatment of benign uterine and ovarian pathologies.

This new methodology, known by its acronym V-NOTES (Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery), represents a fusion of two complementary surgical procedures: vaginal surgery and laparoscopic surgery. The intervention involves a small incision in the vagina and the use of advanced access platforms for visualization and operation with a camera.
The most frequent applications of this technique include hysterectomy (uterus removal), adnexectomy (ovary and fallopian tube removal), and cystectomy (cyst removal). The main benefits of this combination are the reduction of the risk of hernias and infections, as well as the absence of visible external scars.
Furthermore, patients experience less postoperative pain compared to conventional laparoscopy. Recovery is significantly faster, allowing hospital discharge in just 24 hours and without the need for surgical dressings. In many cases, patients can resume their daily activities the day after the intervention.
The Gynecology and Obstetrics Unit of the Hospital Fundación Alcorcón, led by doctor Berta Martín Cabrejas, has already performed the first two interventions using this technique, achieving excellent results. This unit comprises a team of nearly 80 professionals, including more than 20 specialist doctors and over 20 midwives.
Annually, the unit attends approximately 1,000 births and a total of about 38,000 consultations. It is noteworthy that this unit houses one of the eight In Vitro Fertilization units available in the Madrid Health Service.
