The school admission process for the upcoming academic year has triggered a wave of complaints in Alcorcón. Numerous families have found themselves without a place in their first-choice high school, and in some cases, have not secured a spot in any of the centers initially applied for. This situation has led the Municipal Government and the Federation of Associations of Parents of Students (FAPA) Francisco Giner de los Ríos to demand an increase in public school places within the municipality.
The FAPA has indicated that some families who applied to Secondary Education Institutes (IES) have been reassigned to CEIPSO centers that were not among their preferences. Furthermore, cases of siblings being enrolled in different schools and students being assigned to educational centers outside the municipality of Alcorcón have been identified.
The mayor of Alcorcón, Candelaria Testa, met with representatives of the FAPA to address the issue. The mayor reiterated the municipality's long-standing demand for the construction of a new high school in the Ensanche Sur area, highlighting the high demand at centers such as IES Galileo Galilei, IES Jorge Guillén, and IES Prado de Santo Domingo. The Local Government believes the pressure on certain institutes underscores the need to expand public educational offerings in a constantly growing city.
The problem also extends to Infant and Primary education stages. The FAPA Francisco Giner de los Ríos reports that some primary schools with sufficient demand to maintain or expand educational lines are not receiving the necessary authorization. Centers like CEIPSO San José de Valderas, CEIP Claudio Sánchez Albornoz, and CEIP Chaves Nogales are among those mentioned, where it is noted that there is space for more students but new classrooms are not being made available.
Provisional data from the FAPA reflects the saturation in key high schools: IES Jorge Guillén has 74 unadmitted applications, IES Galileo Galilei has 43, and IES Prado de Santo Domingo has nearly fifty. IES Los Castillos and CEIPSO Cervantes also show demand exceeding available places.
Both the City Council and the FAPA have submitted complaints to the Education Department of the Community of Madrid. Key demands include increasing public places, opening new educational lines where demand is high, and ensuring that families can enroll their children within the municipality. Both entities agree on the need to strengthen the public education network and implement structural solutions to prevent this situation from recurring.
