The General Subdirectorate of Civil Protection of the Community of Madrid has reported the activation of the Heatwave warning, communicated by the Area of Environmental Health Risk Surveillance. According to the Action Plan for High Temperature Episodes, the southern zone, vegas, and west are at Level 2 (High risk), while the sierra and the metropolitan and Henares areas remain at Level 1 (Precaution).
The risk level was calculated using an algorithm that considers the maximum temperatures forecast for today and the next two days compared to the reference thresholds for the three geographical zones of the Community of Madrid. The maximum temperatures predicted for today and tomorrow are 38.1 °C and 39.3 °C, respectively.
Vulnerable population groups particularly include infants, children, individuals over 65 years old, people with chronic illnesses (cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, diabetes), and outdoor workers or athletes.
Heatwaves can cause conditions ranging from dermatitis and sunburn to heatstroke, which can be fatal or leave significant lasting effects. Symptoms of heatstroke include elevated body temperature (up to 40° C), hot and dry skin, headache, nausea, drowsiness, intense thirst, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
It is recommended to stay hydrated by drinking at least 2 liters of fluids daily, avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day or engaging in intense exercise, remain in cool areas, shower frequently, eat light meals, and protect oneself from the sun with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
Furthermore, it is advised to consult with a doctor about complementary measures if taking medication or having a chronic condition, pay attention to elderly family members and neighbors, especially if they live alone, and keep babies and young children cool and hydrated.
