“"We want to assume that this project has the approval and endorsement of those higher bodies upon which our designation as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape is based, because it seems to us that putting fences in this environment will mean a radical change in the landscape, especially when they are green and measure two and a half meters high."

Adif has tendered a project worth 1.8 million euros for the execution of fencing works in the municipalities of Valdemoro and Aranjuez (Madrid), and Seseña and Ontígola (Toledo), with a six-month execution period.
The action, which will take place in a sensitive area such as the Historic Sotos, includes the installation of 2 kilometers of concrete fences and walls to improve railway safety and prevent pedestrian and animal traffic on the tracks. The tender, published on the State Contracting Platform, focuses on line 300 Madrid-Chamartín – Estación del Norte.
In Aranjuez, the affected section runs from kilometer points 45/942 to 47/380, a transition zone between the urban environment and areas of ecological and agricultural value, frequently used by residents for walks and sports activities. The project's report highlights the social use of the paths adjacent to the railway platform.
Jesús Mario Blasco, Councillor Spokesperson for the Independent Citizen Group, has expressed concern about the landscape impact of the fences, which will be 2.5 meters high. He recalled previous complaints from 2014 regarding the visual impact of concrete and wire mesh fences on the railway bridge over the Tajo River, lamenting that not only are past mistakes not being corrected, but further ones are being perpetuated in a World Heritage site.
The expediente documentation also details the installation of 3,796 meters of simple torsion fencing and 850 meters of urban type M fencing. The type M fencing includes a reinforced concrete wall 680 mm high and 300 mm thick, above which a metal railing is installed with posts 1850 mm high.
