They also suggest having a sump pump if possible, preparing an emergency kit with medication, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and documentation, as well as having enough water and food for at least three days. It is urged to place valuables, documents, and toxic products out of reach of water and to know evacuation routes and locations.
During a risk situation, the importance of following evacuation measures and authorities' instructions is emphasized, staying informed through media and official accounts. Approaching riverbeds, streams, ravines, or flood-prone areas is discouraged, and warnings are issued about the danger of bridges, which can collapse. It is recommended to avoid traveling by vehicle unless absolutely necessary and never to drive through flooded areas or affected road sections.
In case of evacuation, it is crucial to report arrival to local authorities and provide the required personal data. It is advisable to disconnect electricity, gas, and water from the home if necessary, close and secure doors and windows, not spread rumors, and call 112 only in case of emergency.
Once the emergency has passed, it is recommended to inspect the home for any damage and verify the proper functioning of basic services. It is important to avoid consuming water that does not offer hygienic guarantees, follow health and hygiene rules, and begin cleaning from higher areas.
Residents can collaborate with emergency teams by following their instructions and placing unusable belongings on sidewalks or roadways, without obstructing traffic or emergency and cleaning efforts. The Nuevo Baztán City Council and its Civil Protection department call on citizens to act with prudence and always follow emergency service recommendations in the face of adverse weather events, highlighting that anticipation and citizen collaboration are essential.
