The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility commenced on September 28 the second phase of repair works on three viaducts of the A-1 highway, located in the municipalities of Venturada and Cabanillas de la Sierra, within the Community of Madrid. The affected kilometer points are 51.2, 53.8, and 54.8 of the highway.
This new phase involves an investment of 7.28 million euros. Added to the already completed first phase, the total projected investment for the comprehensive rehabilitation of these structures amounts to 10.6 million euros (VAT included).
To minimize traffic disruptions, the works will be carried out in phases and simultaneously on all three viaducts, closing only one lane at a time. Work will begin on the left lane of the carriageway towards Madrid, followed by the right lane of the same carriageway. Once completed, the work will move to the carriageway towards Burgos, following a similar sequence. At all times, three lanes will remain open to traffic in both directions, with the possibility of opening an additional lane in the opposite direction when necessary.
During the first phase, initiated in 2024, repairs were made to the beams, piers, abutments, and support devices of the three viaducts. The current second phase will focus on the platform of the six decks (one for each carriageway), thus completing the integral rehabilitation of the structures. The work includes complete waterproofing of the decks, their repaving, and the replacement of containment systems with new high-performance barriers, along with the renewal of joints and improvement of drainage.
This action aims to increase the durability of the viaducts, protecting them against water ingress and de-icing salts used in winter maintenance, and to improve the safety of the more than 30,000 vehicles that use this access corridor to Madrid daily.
