Between Friday, September 25, and Sunday, September 27, the I March for the Railway Memory Sites will be held, organized by several cultural associations. The objective is to walk through emblematic points linked to the construction of the Madrid-Burgos Direct Railway.
The route will be divided into three stages. The first day, Friday, will start in Soto del Real and end in Miraflores de la Sierra, with stops to explain the history of the former Penal Detachment of Chozas de la Sierra and that of Miraflores de la Sierra.
On Saturday, the march will continue from Miraflores de la Sierra to Bustarviejo, where the former Penal Detachment of Bustarviejo, known as Los Barracones, will be visited, and a talk will be offered.
The final stage, on Sunday, will depart from Bustarviejo and cover approximately 15 kilometers to Garganta de los Montes, including tunnels and areas of former penal detachments such as those in Valdemanco and Lozoyuela.
According to the organizers, between 1941 and 1957, around 6,000 penal workers participated in the construction of this approximately 74-kilometer railway line. The eleven detachments related to these works were declared Democratic Memory Sites by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory.
The initiative aims to bring these spaces closer to the public by combining hiking, heritage, and railway history, with the support of various entities and administrations.
