The Community of Madrid has been honored at the Digital Skills Awards 2026 for its RETOMadrID initiative, which has successfully reduced the digital divide in 43 rural municipalities across the region, training more than 5,300 individuals.

The award recognizes the regional government's efforts to enhance the digital skills of residents, particularly those over 65, who constitute 80% of the program's participants. This initiative, spearheaded by the General Directorate for Territorial Rebalancing under the Ministry of Presidency, Justice, and Local Administration, was conducted between 2024 and 2026.
Municipalities such as Aldea del Fresno, Cenicientos, Colmenar del Arroyo, Chapinería, Horcajuelo de la Sierra, Moralzarzal, Redueña, Robregordo, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Somosierra, Valdemaqueda, Valdemanco, El Vellón, Venturada, Villa del Prado, and Villanueva del Pardillo have benefited from this training.
RETOMadrID utilized the TechPeopleCare method, enabling individuals with no prior digital knowledge to acquire basic digital competencies through video tutorials on computers, without the need for an on-site instructor.
Training sessions took place in rural centers of the Sierra Norte, Los Pinares, and Sudeste Intermunicipal associations, as well as municipal libraries, Adult Education Centers (CEPAs), and elder residences managed by the Madrid Agency for Social Care (AMAS). A total of 120 Digital Inclusion Points (PID) equipped with computers were established for these sessions.
