Mountainous landscape of Sierra Norte in Madrid, ideal for cycling.
The Community of Madrid has announced the first edition of the Pueblos con Vida Sierra Norte Cycling Tour, an event that on June 7 will connect some of the most beautiful corners of the northern region by bicycle.
This initiative, which starts and ends in Buitrago del Lozoya, aims to combine sports activity with the appreciation of landscape and nature in a privileged environment. The event is intended to become a regular fixture for cycling enthusiasts and rural tourism in the region.
Participants can choose between two route options, adapted to different fitness levels and cycling experience. The more demanding option covers 143 kilometers and passes through up to 13 municipalities, accumulating a positive elevation gain of 2,835 meters and conquering four mountain passes. For those who prefer a less intense day, there is an alternative of 85 kilometers with an approximate elevation gain of 1,500 meters, passing through 8 localities.
The Sierra del Rincón, recognized for its high natural and environmental value, will be the scenic highlight of the tour. Municipalities such as Puebla de la Sierra, Prádena del Rincón, or La Hiruela, with only a few hundred inhabitants, will become the setting for this event that seeks to highlight the value of these territories.
This tour is part of the Pueblos con Vida program, a regional administration strategy funded with 155 million euros to combat depopulation in Madrid's smallest municipalities, boost the rural economy, and ensure basic public services. Cycling and active tourism are key tools to revitalize local economies and attract visitors.
Cycling is booming in the region, with over 150 cycling clubs and more than 3,000 federated licenses. To support this growth, the regional administration is developing the Basic Network of Cycling Routes, which already has 55 kilometers and plans an investment of 116 million euros to add 387 new kilometers, aiming to make Madrid a safer and more accessible place for cyclists.
