Since 2022, the BISTE Association has been promoting a free therapeutic care program for seniors in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, enhancing their autonomy and social integration.

The BISTE Association marks five years of dedication to the project “Promotion of personal autonomy. Integration and care for the elderly in rural areas”. Since its inception in 2022, this initiative has provided free therapeutic care to elderly individuals in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, aiming to improve their quality of life and foster independence.
The program is primarily funded through grants from the 0.7% of personal income tax (IRPF) of the Community of Madrid, with support from the ”la Caixa” Foundation, contributions from the association itself, and collaboration from beneficiary town councils. This backing has been extended by the Mancomunidad de Servicios Sociales and its social workers, as well as the municipalities of Canencia, Buitrago del Lozoya, Cervera de Buitrago, Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago, Rascafría, Pinilla del Valle, and Garganta de los Montes.
The activities focus on four main pillars: groups for promoting autonomy and social integration, home-based therapy, counseling for family members and caregivers, and support for individuals experiencing unwanted loneliness. These services are delivered by occupational therapists, who apply a comprehensive approach that respects the user's autonomy.
With a very positive assessment after more than four years of work, the project has directly benefited 295 individuals. It has successfully promoted social participation, especially among those who were isolated, and has improved key aspects of their autonomy, creating spaces for leisure and therapeutic encounters.
The BISTE Association aims to strengthen social and community networks, fostering a greater sense of belonging. This project complements the work of public administrations, and efforts will continue in coordination with social services, health centers, and town councils to combine efforts for the benefit of the residents in the participating municipalities.
For more information or to access the service, residents in the collaborating municipalities can call 660 278 327 or contact their designated social worker.
