The initiative, launched this Sunday the 27th, aims to raise visitor awareness about the importance of a more conscious relationship with the destination. The decalogue promotes respect for heritage, the natural environment, local gastronomy, and encourages sustainable mobility and consumption practices.
The ten key messages of the decalogue include: 'Plan your stay', 'Know and value our culture', 'Protect our heritage', 'Respect the natural environment', 'Savor our gastronomy', 'Consume local products', 'Move sustainably', 'Reduce your impact', 'Enjoy consciously', and 'Care for what makes us unique'.
The council emphasizes that tourist responsibility goes beyond minimizing negative impacts, also seeking for visitors to appreciate the municipality's uniqueness and contribute to its care and local economy.
This presentation coincides with the review of a year of intense municipal tourism activity, marked by the promotion of actions aimed at a more sustainable, accessible, diversified, and innovative tourism model.
Among the implemented innovations are the creation of experiences such as the literary route dedicated to Teresa Cardona, connecting the municipality with literature and urban landscape, and mobile photography workshops, which have been very well received.
Guided, costumed, and theatricalized tours have seen high participation, with over 500 registrations. Additionally, the IV Heritage Days have helped bring local history closer to residents and visitors.
In terms of nature and sustainability, the municipality has continued to enhance its natural resources and raise awareness, with initiatives like Nature Watch Madrid 2025. San Lorenzo de El Escorial is advancing in its consolidation as a sustainable tourist destination, improving its environmental, social, and economic management.
Accessibility has also been a key focus, with the development of an Accessible Tourist Itinerary of 2.5 kilometers with low difficulty, designed to facilitate access for a greater number of people.
Support for the local economy has materialized through initiatives promoting local crafts, proximity products, and gastronomy, including the promotion of traditional bizcotelas and an event dedicated to local crafts.
The modernization of tourism has been reinforced with digitalization tools, such as digital signage and systems for analyzing visitor flows, optimizing management and the tourist experience.
The mayor, Carlota López, stated that "tourism must contribute to reinforcing the identity of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and generating value for those who live in the municipality, while offering visitors quality experiences".
López added that "the new Decalogue represents, in this sense, an invitation to participate in that model: tourism that not only attracts visitors but encourages them to know, enjoy, and care for San Lorenzo de El Escorial".
The City Council aims for these ten commitments to serve as a tool for raising awareness among visitors and residents, reminding them that the conservation of heritage, respect for nature, local consumption, and coexistence are essential parts of the travel experience.
