Since its inception in 2021, Sotogüeña has evolved from a local activity into a benchmark event for birdwatching enthusiasts across the region. The festival offers a diverse program including guided tours, photography workshops, and direct observation of the rich mountain biodiversity, attracting visitors interested in calm and educational leisure experiences.
Among the highlighted activities, the ÁLULA association will lead a scientific bird ringing workshop on Friday, May 1st. This practice is essential for biologists to track migratory routes and assess the health of bird populations, offering participants a unique educational experience by witnessing the data collection and animal release process up close.
“"Sotogüeña is an opportunity to highlight the natural environment of Soto del Real and bring ornithology closer to all audiences. This festival helps us consolidate ourselves as an attractive destination for nature tourism, while fostering respect and knowledge of our environmental heritage."
On Saturday, May 2nd, the Dehesa Boyal will be the setting for guided tours led by Diego Gil, from the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC). These will focus on the study of the black starling, a common species with complex social behaviors. Concurrently, the Parque del Río will host storytelling sessions for children, fostering their connection with nature.
On Sunday, May 3rd, photographer Carlos López will lead a nature photography workshop, teaching how to capture the essence of birds without disturbing their environment. Additionally, nest boxes for insectivorous birds will be installed, previously built by children in collaboration with the ANAPRI association, contributing to the biological control of pests in urban parks.
The festival also includes two exhibitions: “Entre dos aguas” at the Cultural Center until May 8th, featuring 22 photographs of migratory birds in the Pedrezuela and Santillana reservoirs; and “Nuestras aves” outside the Art and Tourism Center (CAT), an interactive guide to 40 local species with audio of their calls. Registrations for free activities open on Monday, April 13th on the official festival website.
