The municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial has launched an intensive cleaning plan to improve urban hygiene, especially after recent heatwaves, drought, and the consequences of the late July fire. The aim is to reinforce usual work and respond to environmental conditions and high visitor numbers.
Since the beginning of summer, Cleaning Services have intensified efforts with the hydro-cleaning equipment, using high-pressure water and degreasing products on sidewalks and pedestrian areas, focusing on spots with grease stains, organic waste, and pet urine. In areas with a high concentration of hospitality establishments, cleaning is coordinated with businesses to optimize schedules.
As a novelty, a mechanical scrubber for streets and pedestrian areas has been incorporated, designed to specifically tackle ashes and debris from the fire, grease stains, and other dirt adhered to cobblestones and sidewalks. This new equipment will become a permanent part of the service.
Furthermore, a new open-box versatile equipment for mobile sweeping has been acquired, focusing on the cleaning and maintenance of container areas. This vehicle includes a hydro-cleaning unit and a water tank for cleaning collection points and their containers, as well as space for tools and a lifting ramp for bulky waste.
During July, August, and September, this vehicle will have an additional operator to immediately attend to citizen reports and incidents, functioning as a rapid cleaning intervention service.
The plan also includes intensive use of a high-pressure scrubbing attachment, particularly on the sidewalks of the historic center, for deeper cleaning of pavements affected by stains and adhered dirt. Mechanical and manual scrubbing will be reinforced in the urban center and nearby neighborhoods.
Adding to these resources is a truck-mounted sweeper, incorporated in March, which has helped reinforce cleaning in urbanizations and the Abantos area, increasing the operational capacity of the municipal cleaning service. In parallel, brush cutting and trimming work continues in various areas of the municipality.
The mayor of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Carlota López Esteban, highlighted that this shock plan strengthens street cleaning resources during a period of high public space usage. She noted that the new equipment allows for faster response to incidents without neglecting scheduled work, adapting the service to demanding climatic and environmental conditions. She also emphasized the importance of citizen collaboration in keeping the municipality clean.
