Mountain Cultural Heritage Conference in Sierra de Guadarrama

The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park is hosting an event on May 9th in Manzanares El Real to explore the history of mountain sports.

The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park will hold a conference on May 9th dedicated to mountain cultural heritage in Manzanares El Real, featuring presentations and activities on the history of skiing, mountaineering, and mountain racing.

The Casa de la Montaña in Manzanares El Real, located on Cuatro Peñas Street, will host the Cultural Heritage Day of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park on May 9, 2026. Titled History of Sport in the Sierra de Guadarrama, the program will bring together experts to review the evolution of these disciplines from their origins to the present day.
The opening ceremony, scheduled for 10:00 AM, will be led by a co-director conservator of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (PNSG), who will introduce a series of presentations throughout the morning.
The presentations will cover topics such as the transformation of skiing in the sierra, the history of mountaineering, and the trajectory of mountain competitions. A nivometeorology specialist and UIMLA Mountain Guide will present on Skiing in the Sierra de Guadarrama, from fullness to anachronism. An alpinist, geographer, and writer, former president of the RSEA Peñalara, will discuss Mountaineering in the Sierra de Guadarrama: origins and evolution. Finally, a mountain runner and mountain racing representative for RSEA Peñalara will conclude the block with A Century of Races in Guadarrama.

The conference will continue with a participatory round table discussion from 12:45 PM to 2:30 PM. The debate will focus on the history of skiing, mountaineering, and mountain racing in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park.

The round table will be moderated by an alpinist, lawyer, writer, and former president of the RSEA Peñalara, and will feature a Spanish cross-country skiing champion, an alpinist and director of the Madrid High Mountain School, and a mountain runner, member of the RSEA Peñalara.
In the afternoon, starting at 4:00 PM, attendees can enjoy the natural environment of La Pedriza with two bus route options to the Canto Cochino Information Point. Additionally, the permanent exhibition El Rincón de La Pedriza. Climbing Museum, will be open for visits, guided by a PNSG mountain technician and curator of the exhibition.
