During the Plenary Session held last Thursday, May 7, the opposition in Moralzarzal, comprising Vecinos, PSOE, MeC, and Vox, along with a councilor from the Popular Party, rejected four investment proposals. These initiatives included the construction of a new sports pavilion, urgent repairs to the roof of the Plaza de Toros, an increase in investment for the Patron Saint Festivities, and the renovation of the sewage system through the Sanea Plan.
The City Council has described these investments as “vital for the development and security of the municipality.” The local executive, formed by the Popular Party and Contigo, emphasized that the initiatives have the “necessary technical and financial backing,” highlighting Moralzarzal's strong economic situation, which closed 2025 with a surplus of 2.5 million euros and a treasury surplus of over 6 million.
“"The mayor has lost control of his absolute majority after one of the councilors from his own party, the Popular Party, voted against the local executive's proposals, as has been customary in recent plenary sessions."
The Socialist Party indicated that this situation reveals a “serious internal crisis” within the local government, criticizing the “opacity, lack of information, and total absence of dialogue” with other groups. In response, the opposition has managed to reverse the municipal organization, returning powers to the Plenary Session and reinstating monthly sessions.
Among the rejected projects was the demolition of the old fronton to build a new sports pavilion, a “historic demand” funded by the 2025 treasury surplus. The PSOE argues that the project lacks consensus and that it is incomprehensible to propose new infrastructure while the current sports pavilion suffers from significant maintenance deficiencies.
The early execution of works for the Sanea Plan by the Canal de Isabel II was also rejected. This strategic project aimed to comprehensively renovate the sewage network in critical areas such as the Dehesa Vieja and Olmosierra urbanizations. Municipal sources explained that this action did not entail direct expenditure for the City Council, as the investment would be recovered by the Canal de Isabel II through tariffs, representing “a lost opportunity for external investment to modernize obsolete basic services.”
“"No to works without planning and to 'patch-ups.' The current government's management incapacity was evident in the infrastructure debate. From the PSOE, we have refused to give a blank check to the Sanea Plan sewage works, as the necessary technical reports detailing the problematic points have not been presented, and the Canal de Isabel II has yet to complete the preliminary master plan."
The urgent repair of the roof of the Plaza de Toros, with an investment of 193,322.86 euros, was also denied. The Consistory warned that this blockage compromises the safety of the venue and affects local businesses due to dampness and structural damage. Finally, the proposal to allocate an additional 120,000 euros to the Patron Saint Festivities was rejected, which the City Council considers an obstacle to maintaining the quality of the celebrations. The PSOE, for its part, rejects a “massive and unsustainable” festival model that leads to the degradation of the natural environment.
