The Community of Madrid has initiated the second phase of the project to restore and condition old quarries and abandoned spoil tips in the public utility mountains of Collado Mediano and Alpedrete, with an investment of 450,456.15 euros.

The action will allow for the recovery of degraded areas, improvement of biodiversity, and conditioning of old granite exploitation zones, enhancing the natural, geological, and ethnological heritage of both municipalities. This new phase includes interventions in two public utility mountains in Alpedrete — MUP No. 26, "Cañal, Ladera y Entretérminos," and MUP No. 27, "Dehesa Boyal" — as well as the continuation of the overall recovery project for these old spaces linked to granite extraction, which also includes MUP No. 35, "Monterredondo," belonging to Collado Mediano.
The project addresses the recovery of a landscape deeply linked to the history and traditional economic activity of the area. For decades, granite extraction left a visible mark on the territory, with rock faces, quarries, and spoil tips. The intervention aims to restore these spaces without erasing their history, balancing environmental improvement with the conservation of their cultural and heritage values.
The main planned action is the geomorphological restoration of old quarries and spoil tips, reorganizing materials to create stable reliefs and more natural topographic forms. Sowing and planting will be carried out to promote the vegetal recolonization of the restored surfaces. Other interventions include the formation of rock formations, stabilization of rock faces, removal of accumulated waste, improvement of access and enclosures, and adaptation of elements for public use.
Environmental recovery will be complemented by specific measures to protect biodiversity, such as conditioning traditional masonry structures into bat refuges. Amphibians, seasonal wetlands, vegetation, and fauna will be preserved during the works, and wetland ecological conditions will be improved. Special attention will be paid to the conservation of ethnological heritage, integrating the traces of extraction activity.
The project has a budget of 450,456.15 euros, financed 100% by the Community of Madrid. The planned execution period for this phase is 14 months. This second phase continues the environmental restoration work initiated in 2023, advancing the recovery of degraded spaces and improving the environmental and scenic quality of the mountains.
