The Hoyo de Manzanares City Council, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), has launched a special speed surveillance and control campaign with Municipal Police mobile radars, running from April 13 to 19.

This initiative will focus on urban roads in the municipality where the speed limit is set at 30 km/h. The main objective is to prevent accidents and run-overs, aiming to improve road safety for all road users.

Excessive speed remains one of the most relevant factors in road accidents in Spain, contributing to more than 20 percent of fatal accidents.

According to DGT data, excessive speed is the third most frequent factor in serious incidents and is involved in over 20% of fatal accidents in Spain. Nearly half of drivers admit to exceeding limits in urban areas, which significantly increases the risk for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Local Police of Hoyo de Manzanares has identified the most critical points in the municipality, including areas where residents have expressed concern about speeding. The campaign seeks to reduce risk for both drivers and pedestrians, enhancing safety in the urban environment.
An increase of just 1 km/h in average speed can considerably raise the risk of accidents with casualties. In urban settings, speed is a decisive factor: while a run-over at 80 km/h is almost always fatal, at 30 km/h the risk of death is reduced to 10%. Therefore, the 30 km/h limit on single-lane roads per direction is a crucial measure to protect the most vulnerable users and mitigate injuries in the event of a collision.
