The Tres Cantos City Council has launched new preventive measures and expanded forestry operations to reduce fire risk, particularly during the summer months and in response to high temperatures. The 2026 Municipal Fire Prevention Plan includes around thirty actions carried out throughout the year, which are intensified with the arrival of summer, aiming to protect the municipality's population, homes, and natural spaces.
Among the most significant actions is the expansion of clearing work in the Parque Este, which now covers the entire plot, going beyond the traditional perimeter firebreak. Work has also been carried out in green areas, forest zones, roads, and municipal plots, including specific interventions in the Parque Central for the upcoming Fiestas Patronales. The plan also reinforces protection strips near homes and residential areas, with particular focus on the surroundings of the Arroyo del Bodonal, Tagarral, San Juan, and Teresa de Calcuta.
Forest cleaning and environmental regeneration are other key workstreams. Dry vegetation has been removed from various urban and forest areas, following recommendations from the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Interior of the Community of Madrid. Additionally, pruning, felling, and clearing operations have been conducted, especially after recent storm episodes, and unhealthy cypress specimens have been removed from Alameda Alta street and the Paseo del Carrizal. Natural regeneration processes in areas affected by the 2025 fire are being monitored.
To enhance the efficiency and precision of interventions, the City Council has acquired new specialized forestry machinery and invested in tools and technological equipment for the municipal agricultural tractor. The plan also intensifies inspections of private plots to ensure compliance with cleaning and clearing regulations, with property owners having been informed through a municipal decree and individual communications.
The preventive strategy is developed in coordination with the Community of Madrid, Canal de Isabel II, Iberdrola, and various companies located in sensitive areas of the municipality. The Local Police and Civil Protection also participate to ensure a rapid response to any incident. Citizen collaboration is essential, and meetings have been held with the Mancomunidad de Soto de Viñuelas, residents, and environmental entities. As a complementary measure, a flock of 200 Merino sheep is being used for grazing and natural reduction of vegetation fuel.
In connection with the August 2025 fire, the City Council continues to implement actions such as aid for those affected, distribution of plants to promote environmental recovery, and water consumption rebates. The public is reminded of the importance of their involvement in prevention, especially during the summer months, by adhering to safety recommendations and using natural environments responsibly.
