The Community of Madrid has designed an educational and activity program for residents and students to enjoy the upcoming total solar eclipse on August 12 with safety and knowledge.

On August 12, a total solar eclipse will cross the Iberian Peninsula, with a significant visibility in several municipalities in the north and east of the Community of Madrid. To ensure this astronomical event is an educational experience, especially for young people, the Ministry of Education, Science and Universities has implemented the 'Eclipse Wednesdays' initiative. This weekly program offers didactic activities aimed at schools and institutes throughout the region.
The Minister of Education, Mercedes Zarzalejo, recently visited the CEIP Infanta Leonor in San Agustín del Guadalix to observe the creative and scientific projects that students have developed around this phenomenon. The program aims not only to inform about what an eclipse is but also to foster critical thinking and scientific curiosity in students.
Every Wednesday, educational centers receive didactic materials through a link provided by the Ministry. These resources include downloadable guides, multimedia content, and practical proposals with guidance for teachers. Activities are adapted to each educational stage: from a playful approach in Early Childhood Education, simulations with Micro:Bit in Primary School, to the construction of devices to detect variations in the atmospheric electric field in Secondary School. Interactive activities and a gamified adventure with scientific challenges and astronomical data are also offered.
A total of eleven Madrid municipalities will offer views of the total solar eclipse: Somosierra, Buitrago del Lozoya, La Cabrera, El Molar, Meco, San Agustín del Guadalix, Puerto de Navacerrada, Colmenar Viejo, Alcalá de Henares, Tres Cantos, and San Sebastián de los Reyes. Somosierra will record the longest duration of totality, with one minute and 29 seconds, a natural spectacle that experts describe as impressive.
Cultural and educational events are being organized in these municipalities for residents and visitors, including designated observation areas, talks with experts, musical performances, and the presence of professional astronomers. The Eclipse Festival in Buitrago del Lozoya stands out, combining the observation with outdoor family activities and food trucks at the Riosequillo pools.
The Community of Madrid will distribute certified special glasses to ensure eye safety during observation, as looking directly at the Sun without adequate protection can cause irreversible damage. A practical guide with safety recommendations has also been prepared. All detailed information on activities, locations, and schedules is available on the official portal of the Community of Madrid.
Given the forecast of a significant influx of visitors in locations like Somosierra or Buitrago del Lozoya, it is advisable to book the day in advance. The educational materials from 'Eclipse Wednesdays' are designed for schoolchildren to turn this phenomenon into a memorable learning opportunity.
