The ARBA Tres Cantos association has voiced concerns over recent clearing work in El Terregal and Los Alcornoques parks, which, according to the organization, has caused significant damage to local flora and volunteer-planted species.

The clearing operations, carried out in April in Tres Cantos, have drawn strong criticism from the ARBA Tres Cantos association. The organization questions the appropriateness of the intervention, as it coincided with the flowering period of numerous plant species, potentially leading to negative consequences for local biodiversity.
According to the association, the work was performed at a crucial point in the vegetation's biological cycle. During these weeks, many annual herbaceous plants complete their flowering, an essential process for their reproduction and for maintaining the ecological balance that supports pollinators, insects, and birds.
Among the affected species, ARBA highlighted the presence of flowering French lavender and thyme, as well as up to five varieties of wild orchids. The removal of vegetation cover at this stage prevents seed production, compromising natural regeneration in future seasons. The interruption of the flowering cycle also impacts pollinating insects, whose population is already showing a downward trend, thereby reducing the ecological value of these natural spaces.
In addition to the impact on wild flora, the association has pointed out the deterioration of plantations established by residents and volunteers over the years. It is estimated that around 500 specimens, including holm oaks, cork oaks, almond trees, ash trees, walnut trees, rockroses, and broom, have suffered damage of varying degrees due to the work carried out by a municipal subcontractor. These citizen initiatives, representing a continuous effort in environmental recovery, have been harmed by mechanical intervention without adequate coordination.

"The action is framed within the context of the fire recorded in Tres Cantos in 2025. ARBA recognizes the need for preventive measures, although it questions the effectiveness of spring clearing."

The association proposes adjusting the clearing schedule to late spring or early summer, when most species have completed their reproductive cycle. They also suggest alternatives such as selective interventions or perimeter clearing designed with technical criteria, emphasizing that El Terregal and Los Alcornoques parks should be managed as living ecosystems, with planning based on ecological criteria rather than solely on general actions.
