Renfe has announced a new phase of improvements at the Príncipe Pío station, focusing on the conservation of its historical surroundings and traveler accessibility. A key project involves the rehabilitation of the fence along the Paseo del Rey, an initiative with a maximum budget of 705,973.87 euros. The bidding process for this work, deemed "highly urgent" due to its technical and heritage constraints, concluded on September 21st.
This intervention complements another project already awarded for the renovation of lifting mechanisms. The 13 escalators and the current elevating platform will be replaced by a new elevator. The work will also ensure facilities comply with current regulations, enhancing safety, operability, fire protection, drainage, and overall accessibility.
The station, a unique building from the late 19th century featuring modernist architecture, aims for modernization while retaining its historical identity. Although the facade maintains an imperial style, the interior has been adapted into a modern and accessible space. Two elevators and two escalators at specific access points still await renovation, which will be part of future Adif projects.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility emphasizes that the combined interventions aim to update one of Madrid's most recognizable stations, facilitating travel and improving safety and accessibility for all passengers.
