Playwright and director María Velasco, winner of the National Drama Literature Award 2024, premieres her play Mantener fuera del alcance de los niños (Keep Out of Reach of Children) at Teatro de La Abadía in Madrid. The piece, running from October 29 to November 22, narrates personal childhood experiences in special education classrooms in the first person.

The play, which celebrates difference and minority, is presented as a hybrid of text-based theater, live music, and contemporary dance. María Velasco once again incorporates live music and performance, this time collaborating with flamenco singer Al-Blanco and performer Mario Patrón. The text and direction are by Velasco herself, who co-produces the work with Pecado de Hybris.
During the press presentation, Velasco quoted Joan-Carles Mèlich to define childhood as "the homeland of uncertainty, of curiosity," comparing it to an artistic process. The playwright explained that the project seeks to "return to the scene of the crime," to the personal experience in a special educational needs classroom, to "heal that memory" and reflect on school as a space that can define "normality" and people's futures.
Mantener fuera del alcance de los niños intertwines the experiences of non-normative childhoods with flamenco laments and references to horror masters like Mariana Enríquez or Stephen King. The play addresses themes such as revenge, the tyranny of normativity, the pain of exclusion, discrimination, and ableism, exploring how roles adopted in childhood impact adult life.
Mario Patrón described the work as "a reaction to marginalization" and invited the audience to "keep company," while Al-Blanco stated that the play "will open the eyes of many people who have suffered, but also those who have caused that suffering."
