The Community of Madrid is progressing with its Early Detection Program for Breast Cancer (DEPRECAM), which helps increase survival rates by identifying the pathology in its early stages. Women aged between 50 and 69, in good health and without symptoms, can undergo biannual screening mammograms.

The Minister of Health, Fátima Matute, visited the Breast Unit at the 12 de Octubre Public University Hospital ahead of World Cancer Day. In 2025, 1,928 suspected cases of malignancy were detected, representing 1.68% of the women studied. Early detection enabled further study with complementary tests and treatment. The regional government is working to expand the program's age range from 45 to 74 years.
To manage appointments, oncological coordination services invite women to participate in the program. Up to 30% of users manage their own appointments by scheduling a date and time that suits them best through the specific app on the Virtual Health Card, the website, or by phone at 900 102 112.
The service visited at the 12 de Octubre Hospital covers population screening, care for pathological breast conditions, diagnostic breast interventional procedures, and local therapy for certain pathologies. It is equipped with advanced technology, including four mammography units (2D and 3D with contrast), four latest-generation ultrasound machines optimized for breast imaging, an automatic 3D ultrasound system, prone and automated biopsy systems, and an MRI with dedicated antennas and sequences, operated by eight professionals.
To enhance citizen decision-making and information, the content available on the website regarding the program's guarantees and the importance of participation has been reviewed and reinforced: www.comunidad.madrid/servicios/salud/deteccion-precoz-cancer-mama.
The results of the DEPRECAM program are made possible by the professionals involved at each care level within the public hospitals of the Community of Madrid, from the physicians and nursing staff who initiate and remind patients about these tests to the technicians and doctors who perform and report on the tests.
