The Mathematics Intensive Program (MIP) at the ICMAT, Spain's first intensive training program for university mathematics students, welcomes four new students from the UCM. They join the four from the previous cohort, completing the program's second edition. This initiative, free for students, awards a specific degree issued by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) upon graduation, drawing inspiration from prestigious European institutions.
The new participants, selected from 40 applications, come from public high schools across Spain and have prior experience in mathematical talent promotion programs and competitions. Among them are Héctor Hidalgo from IES María Guerrero in Collado Villalba, a participant in the Small Mathematics Institute (PIM) and winner of the XXIV "Joaquín Hernández" Inter-center Mathematics Competition; Leo Meriläinen from IES Diego Velázquez in Torrelodones, also from PIM and a recipient of awards in the Inter-center Competition and the Mathematical Olympiad; Pablo París from IES Rosalía de Castro in Santiago de Compostela, with a bronze medal in the Galician Mathematical Olympiad; and Alejandro Zuate from IES Ciudad de los Poetas in Madrid, awarded in International, Ibero-American, and Spanish Mathematical Olympiads.
Each student is assigned an ICMAT mentor who will guide them throughout their degree, providing scientific and academic advice. This year, a new feature is the introduction of tutored workgroups. In these groups, students will tackle advanced research problems collaboratively, coordinated by ICMAT researchers, fostering the collaborative dimension of mathematical research. Four groups have been created: one on fluid mechanics, another on vector calculus and differentiable manifolds, and two on algebraic groups and varied topics.
The MIP continues to offer its introductory courses on advanced mathematics topics to all interested undergraduate students, requiring prior registration. The first course, "Ideas on the Distribution of Prime Numbers," taught by Fernando Chamizo (ICMAT-UAM), began on October 2nd. It will be followed by others on the mathematics of fluid motion and the modeling of microelectromechanical systems. Sessions are held on Friday afternoons at the ICMAT.
