Dr. Diego San José Saras (Alcalá de Henares, 1994) is a distinguished professional in the field of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He currently serves as Principal Investigator of the Health Outcomes Research Group at IRYCIS, under the leadership of Dr. Cristina Díaz-Agero. His specialized training took place at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital (HURYC), where he has continued his clinical and research activities.
After completing his residency, he secured a contract to develop the project "Integrated system for quality and continuity of care between hospital care and nursing homes." His research focuses on Patient Safety, Healthcare Appropriateness, and Health Outcomes, in both hospital and non-hospital settings. He completed training stays at two World Health Organization collaborating centers for Patient Safety in Lisbon and Florence.
Dr. San José holds an International Doctorate in Health Sciences. His doctoral thesis addressed the association between hospital overuse and adverse healthcare-related events. He has participated in multicenter studies and published in international journals, culminating in his co-direction of the National Study of Adverse Events and Hospital Overuse (ENEAS II), involving over 175 Spanish hospitals and nearly 40,000 patients.
Concurrently, he has extended his research to the socio-health field to improve Patient Safety in Nursing Homes. Recent projects funded by the ISCIII, such as "Design of tools to transform intra- and extramural clinical error in socio-health centers (DECIDE)" and "Optimization of Care Quality for Nursing Home Users and Coordination in Focused Care on Aging (SAFE-AGE)", reinforce the group's position in this area.
His scientific career has been recognized with awards such as the Distinction from the Community of Madrid for Best Quality Practices, the UAM-ASISA Award for best article of 2023, and the Honorable Mention from the Vithas Foundation.
Currently, Dr. San José balances his clinical and research work with training new researchers, supervising four doctoral theses. He also teaches university courses on Patient Safety and Quality of Care at the International University of La Rioja.
