The Vistalegre Social Kitchen, located in the Palacio Vistalegre in Carabanchel, has marked five years since its launch. This initiative, created as a response to the overcrowding of social canteens during the COVID-19 pandemic, has successfully distributed over 120,800 meals to vulnerable individuals in Madrid.
What began as an emergency solution has evolved into a stable project, capable of preparing 560 meals weekly. The initiative is made possible by the efforts of volunteers and the support of private companies and foundations, which provide funding, equipment, food, and logistics. The NGO Cooperación Internacional leads the project, which emerged from a need identified in the autumn of 2020.
Collaboration with the Instituto Tecnológico Fuenllana provided the necessary technical knowledge in hospitality, while the Palacio Vistalegre donated the space. The first 120 meals were dispatched on March 22, 2021, destined for canteens in Carabanchel and Tetuán. Demand has remained high and even increased, extending to other canteens such as the one in Torrejón de Ardoz and Mundo Justo at the Centro de Día Teena María (Diego de León), raising the number of beneficiaries from 80 to 240 people between 2020 and 2026.
The kitchen's operation resembles an industrial logistics chain. Food arrives through purchases and donations from companies like Mercadona or Grupo AmRest (KFC). Volunteers collect these products and transport them to Vistalegre, where they are prepared under the supervision of professionals trained at the Escuela de Hostelería Fuenllana. The company Logista Parcel ensures the menus reach their destination while maintaining the cold chain.
Juan Manuel Rivera, a volunteer since the beginning, dedicates five hours weekly to preparing shipments, vacuum-packing food, and logistics. "You just need to have the desire to dedicate a little of your time to others. You make up for the rest with willpower," he states. Although there is no direct daily contact with the recipients, the canteens are visited periodically to understand their needs.
The project is sustained without public subsidies, relying on the backing of companies and foundations. The emotional return, from receiving positive feedback on the users' favorite dishes and seeing the enthusiasm with which they await the meals, is a key driver for the 35 stable volunteers and approximately fifty occasional collaborators.
Five years later, the Vistalegre Social Kitchen remains necessary, addressing a less visible but equally real social emergency: that of those who need a dignified meal to get by. The increasing collaboration from companies and volunteers allows for the project's reach to be expanded.
