The regional government is expected to approve this Wednesday the declaration of Velintonia as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Intangible Heritage. This measure recognizes the property's significance in the evolution and promotion of contemporary Spanish poetry, as well as its symbolic value.
The house, which already had protection as an Asset of Patrimonial Interest, was the home of Vicente Aleixandre and a fundamental meeting point for various generations of writers and creators associated with the Generation of '27. Prominent figures of Spanish literature such as Dámaso Alonso, Gerardo Diego, Luis Cernuda, Rafael Alberti, and Federico García Lorca, among others, frequented its halls.
The Community of Madrid, after acquiring the property at auction for 3.1 million euros, will transform it into the House of Poetry. This new cultural facility will be dedicated to contemporary poetic creation and to preserving the legacy of the '27 movement. The project will be a central pillar in the commemoration of the centenary of this literary movement and the 50th anniversary of Aleixandre's Nobel Prize in 1977.
The building's rehabilitation will be carried out with differentiated criteria. The section at number 3 will become a house museum dedicated to Aleixandre's life and work, while number 5 will house the poet's archive, an auditorium, offices, and an exhibition hall for cultural dissemination activities. The House of Poetry will offer a varied program including talks, conferences, and exhibitions, as well as initiatives to support young poets and stimulate literary creation in contemporary Madrid.
Aleixandre settled in Velintonia in 1927. After leaving the residence during the Civil War, he returned in 1940 and transformed the space into a center for literary gatherings and hospitality, whose importance grew significantly after he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1977.
