The honor, traditionally reserved for heads of state and internationally prominent figures, was bestowed upon the opposition leader “for her fight for human rights and democracy,” as highlighted by the mayor during the institutional ceremony held on Friday, April 17, 2026.
The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, underscored the opposition figure's trajectory, defining her as a symbol of the Venezuelan people's struggle “to achieve the freedom they deserve.” He expressed his hope that this recognition would help bring that freedom “as soon as possible to our beloved Venezuela.”
“"Freedom is the most desired gift that fills the heavens."
The mayor also referenced the Spanish Transition as a model for Venezuela, emphasizing the importance of “clean ballot boxes” and the restoration of national unity. He also warned about the need to protect democracy in Spain, stressing that freedom must be an end in itself.
For her part, the opposition leader expressed gratitude for the recognition, presenting the Golden Key as a symbol of unity between two peoples who have endured dictatorships. In her speech, she asserted that Venezuela has resisted “27 years against a brutal tyranny” and that, despite attempts to establish a totalitarian project with international support, “they did not count on the strength of a people determined to be free.”
The opposition leader highlighted the reorganization process of the opposition since 2023, which successfully rebuilt national unity and articulated a broad social movement. She maintained that the opposition defeated Chavismo, legitimizing the start of a new political era after the departure of the former president.
“"Indeed, for freedom, one can and must risk one's life. Thank you, and may we repeat this historic day very soon in the lands of a free Venezuela."
Despite the progress, the opposition leader warned of the “monumental challenge” that remains to consolidate popular sovereignty and ensure full respect for the mandate expressed at the polls, calling for the defense of constitutional order and international support.
The ceremony was attended by numerous political representatives, including a PP deputy, the former regional president, and the former mayor of Madrid, as well as councilors from various municipal groups.
