A 120-hectare plot in Valdebebas, currently largely unused and owned by Real Madrid, will be transformed into a major technology campus named ‘Madrid Innovation District’. The Governing Board of Madrid has initially approved the necessary urban planning changes for this project, which aims to attract technology and research companies to the city.
The project, driven by Real Madrid, anticipates an investment of over 2 billion euros. According to the socioeconomic impact report from the City Council, the campus is expected to generate 1.213 billion euros annually for the Madrid GDP and create approximately 23,800 jobs when it reaches full capacity, particularly in the scientific, educational, and healthcare sectors.
In exchange for allowing the campus development, the City Council will receive over 200,000 square meters of land free of charge. Of this area, 166,000 square meters will be allocated to expanding the Metropolitan Forest and creating a linear park along the Plata stream, while the remaining 35,000 square meters will be dedicated to a new public facility focused on innovation.
The location of the future campus, adjacent to Barajas Airport, the Valdebebas interchange, Isabel Zendal Hospital, and IFEMA Madrid, is considered key by the City Council for the project's success. It is estimated that the urbanization works could begin between 2028 and 2030, with the construction of the campus extending until 2035.
