Unemployment in the Community of Madrid Rises for Third Consecutive Month in March

The Madrid region recorded 282,625 unemployed individuals in March, a 0.12% increase from February, bucking the national trend.

The Community of Madrid experienced an increase of 342 registered unemployed individuals during March, raising the total figure to 282,625 and marking the third consecutive month of increase, contrary to the national trend.

According to data published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, unemployment in the Community of Madrid grew by 0.12% in March compared to February. Despite this rise, the current volume of unemployed people is the lowest for a March month since 2008.
On an annual basis, the situation is more favorable, with 11,192 fewer unemployed people than in March of the previous year, representing a decrease of 3.81%. However, Madrid was one of three autonomous communities, along with the Canary Islands and the Basque Country, where unemployment increased last month, diverging from the general trend in Spain, where unemployment decreased by 22,934 people.
Of the total 282,625 unemployed in the Community of Madrid, 115,231 are men (246 more than in February) and 167,394 are women (96 more). The increase was mainly concentrated in the under-25 age group, which added 687 unemployed, reaching 20,972. Conversely, unemployment among those over 25 decreased by 345 people, standing at 261,653.
By sector, services continue to concentrate the largest number of unemployed with 228,896 people, 491 more than in February. Construction was the best-performing sector, reducing its number of unemployed by 749 people to 17,893. Industry recorded 15,139 unemployed (50 fewer), while agriculture added 31 unemployed, reaching 1,831. The group without previous employment increased by 619 people, to 18,866.
Regarding foreign unemployment, the Community of Madrid registered 50,828 unemployed, an increase of 726 people compared to the previous month. However, compared to March 2025, unemployment among foreigners decreased by 2,664 people. Of this total, 17,080 come from EU countries and 33,748 from outside the European Union.
Despite the rise in unemployment, hiring showed a strong rebound in March, with 189,212 contracts signed in the Community of Madrid, 25,685 more than in February. However, on an annual basis, there was a decrease of 18,879 contracts. Permanent contracts accounted for 51.19% of the total, surpassing temporary ones.
At the end of February, 157,371 people received some type of unemployment benefit in the Community of Madrid, with an average contributory benefit of 1,062 euros per beneficiary.
