The Madrid City Council and the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) implemented a free public transport campaign on April 7 and 8, coinciding with the return from Easter Week, which resulted in a significant increase in passengers on buses and bicimad, notably attracting over half a million non-regular users.

During these two days, municipal buses transported 3,602,716 passengers, of whom 511,353 were users who do not regularly use the service. Concurrently, bicimad recorded 100,230 trips, with 47,752 made by individuals without a flat-rate subscription, underscoring the positive impact of the measure in promoting sustainable mobility in Madrid.
The deputy mayor and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, presented these figures, which confirm a growing trend in public transport usage. Bus demand on the free days surpassed previous years' records, showing an increase of 1.34% compared to 2025 and 3.09% compared to 2024, for equivalent post-Easter Week periods.

Free public transport has become an effective tool to respond quickly to specific situations, such as high pollution episodes or events that increase mobility demand.

Since January 2021, following storm Filomena, the City Council and EMT Madrid have activated free bus services on 31 occasions, totaling 76 free days. Since Easter Week 2025, bicimad has joined this initiative, offering an additional alternative on high-demand days. In total, these campaigns have moved nearly 86.30 million passengers on municipal buses, integrating 16.28 million non-regular users.
The record for passengers on a free day was reached on November 28, 2025, coinciding with Black Friday, when 1,944,021 users utilized EMT buses. For bicimad, September 8, 2025 stood out with 66,605 trips. These periods of free service aim to reduce polluting emissions, alleviate traffic congestion, and encourage a shift towards more sustainable transport habits in the medium and long term.
EMT Madrid has experienced sustained growth in user numbers, reaching a historic record in 2025 with 512,028,994 million passengers transported, representing a daily average of 1,402,975 users. Meanwhile, bicimad exceeded 13.73 million trips in 2025 and currently boasts a network of 635 stations and 7,795 bicycles across Madrid's 21 districts, reinforcing its role in the municipal strategy for fostering sustainable travel.
