A large-scale fire broke out early this Thursday, June 18, in an industrial warehouse used for storage units located on San Mamés street, within the Madrid district of Villaverde. The intensity of the fire has severely compromised the structural stability of the building, with flames breaking through three of its facades, keeping emergency services on high alert for a potential collapse.
The fire is generating a large column of black smoke visible from various points in the region. Fifteen units from the Madrid City Council Fire Department were immediately dispatched to the scene. The crews are focusing their efforts on containing the flames and tackling multiple hotspots to stabilize the structure.
Although the affected depot does not have residential buildings nearby, the proximity of a service station deemed high-risk prompted authorities to carry out a preventive evacuation of the gas station. Meanwhile, the Madrid Police have established a wide security cordon around San Mamés street and adjacent roads to ensure public safety and facilitate the movement of heavy firefighting vehicles.
Following initial checks, it has been confirmed that no individuals were inside the warehouse. Additionally, personnel from SAMUR-Civil Protection were present at the scene on a precautionary basis to provide medical assistance if needed, although no injuries or smoke inhalation cases have been reported so far. The causes of the fire are currently under investigation.
