Madrid's Mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, visited the last executed section of the south A-5 tunnel this Monday to announce the completion of its excavation. The work extends from the Padre Piquer avenue interchange to the connection point with the M-30 underpass on Portugal avenue.
“"We are undertaking the biggest urban transformation that has occurred in the city of Madrid over the last decades."
During the visit, Almeida emphasized that the completion of this phase represents a crucial milestone in the project's development, confirming that the works “are on schedule”. He also announced that in September, landscaping work will begin on the Southwest Green Promenade, an initiative aimed at improving sustainability and offering 80,000 m2 of green areas, along with a 90% reduction in traffic and pollution.
The project, with an investment exceeding 400 million euros, covers 100,000 square meters and aims to cover the Extremadura highway to create the Southwest Green Promenade. This new 3.2-kilometer green axis will be accessible to citizens and will connect with Madrid Río, Casa de Campo, and the Latina Green Wedge.
With the participation of 600 workers and over 400 machines, the excavation of the south tunnel has been completed, and almost all of the upper slab, exceeding 93,000 m2, has been installed. The total tunnel excavation in both directions has reached 83%, with 100% for the inbound direction to Madrid and 70% for the outbound direction (north tunnel), which is expected to be fully excavated by May. In June, the placement of beams in the Batán and Boadilla structures will begin, concluding in July to reduce construction noise.
After the summer, while tunnel connections to M-30 systems (ventilation, emergency exits, cameras, extractors) and testing phases are carried out, the urbanization of the Southwest Green Promenade on the surface will begin. This action will remove the barrier that the highway has represented since 1968 for residents of the Lucero, Aluche, and Las Águilas neighborhoods in the Latina district, connecting them with Campamento (Latina) and Casa de Campo (Moncloa-Aravaca).
