In Madrid city, the lunar disk covered up to 99% of the Sun, causing unusual shadows and exceptional light in the streets.
One of the most talked-about scenes was from Gran Vía, where the iconic Edificio Carrión and the Schweppes sign accompanied the celestial event. At the pond in El Retiro Park, hundreds of people, including locals and tourists, gathered to follow the event, observing how a kind of artificial night fell upon the lake's boats for several minutes.
In clearer, more northerly locations, such as Juan Carlos I Park in Barajas, the sky offered images of great intensity. The Cuatro Torres (Four Towers), usually focal points of the Madrid skyline, became almost obstacles to viewing the stellar wonder. In municipalities like San Sebastián de los Reyes, where the phenomenon reached its peak, the fascination was even greater.
Beyond the astronomical event, the day passed without significant incidents in the Community of Madrid. However, the so-called 'eclipse mania' caused traffic jams and slow-moving traffic on roads such as the A-1, A-2, M-40, M-45, M-50, and M-607. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) reported closures on the M-601 and M-604 in Navacerrada and Rascafría due to the influx of vehicles heading to the mountains.
The Government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, highlighted the resolution of traffic jams without complications and thanked the public's responsibility and the work of public servants in the security operation. He emphasized that the event proceeded without notable incidents in the Community of Madrid.
