The municipal social care service, Samur Social, has prepared a special operation for the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid, scheduled from June 6 to 9. The aim is to cover any social needs that may arise from the large public gatherings and events planned in the capital.
The operation will consist of 24 professionals from the municipal service and 10 volunteers from the Official College of Social Work of Madrid (COTS). Seven mobile units will also be deployed to respond to any unforeseen situations. The delegate for Social Policies, Family, and Equality of the Madrid City Council, José Fernández, presented the plan from the Samur Social Darío Pérez Madera Central.
Samur Social's work will be carried out in close coordination with other security and emergency services. Their focus will be on assisting minors who may get separated from their guardians, elderly individuals requiring social assistance, people experiencing homelessness, individuals with reduced mobility, and those needing emergency accommodation. Support will also be provided for travel home if crowds prevent return by personal means after receiving medical attention.
“"What you imagine happens, happens. But what you don't imagine also happens. So, we are somewhat prepared or trained for any situation that may arise."
The specific deployment will vary according to the events. On Saturday, June 6, during the vigil near Plaza de Lima, three mobile units with 10 professionals and two volunteers will be activated. On Sunday, June 7, for the mass at Cibeles, four mobile units with 14 professionals and eight volunteers will be deployed.
This operation is part of the general security and emergency plan by the City Council, which will involve approximately 4,000 Municipal Police officers and 1,000 Samur-Civil Protection personnel. Attendees with minors are advised to provide them with a contact number, and in view of the expected high temperatures, to take precautions against heatstroke and stay hydrated.
